Video of Man Carrying Suspicious Bundle Sparks Femicide Outrage in Mexico

A viral surveillance video showing a man carrying a suspicious bundle has intensified public outrage in Mexico following the murder of 28-year-old Lorena Jacqueline Morales.
Morales, who lived in León, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, was reported missing on May 23, 2025, according to local authorities. Her body was found on June 3, stuffed inside a suitcase. That same day, her former employer was arrested in connection with the case.
The video, now part of the official investigation, shows the man entering an apartment building with a large, covered object and later struggling to load a heavy suitcase into the trunk of a car. The video is timestamped May 22, the day before Morales was reported missing.
The Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the footage is being used as evidence in the ongoing case. Authorities have not released details about what occurred before or after the video was recorded.
Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz stated that the case should be investigated as a femicide, a gender-based crime under Mexican law. Femicide refers specifically to the killing of a woman because of her gender.
Mexico has long struggled with high rates of violence against women. In 2023, Mexico recorded 847 cases of femicide across the country. During the first quarter of 2024, an additional 162 cases were reported, based on official government figures.
The death of Morales has intensified demands for improved protection for women and greater accountability from law enforcement and the justice system. Citizens and advocacy groups are urging authorities to take decisive action as the investigation continues.
