Tech magnate Elon Musk has ignited fresh political tensions in Washington after delivering scathing remarks against President Donald Trump’s new tax and spending legislation, branding it a “disgusting abomination” in a tweet that has since gone viral.

Musk’s criticism came just days after he stepped down from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a post he had held in a controversial but high-profile capacity. His comments have reportedly left the West Wingperplexed and disappointed,” with officials grappling with the unexpected fallout.

The bill in question referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” seeks to extend tax cuts and boost defense and border funding. However, it also proposes significant cuts to programs like Medicaid and food assistance. According to a recent estimate by the Congressional Budget Office, the legislation could add approximately $2.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.

Musk’s outrage appears to be motivated by personal and business implications. The bill includes provisions that would eliminate tax credits and rebates benefiting Tesla and electric vehicle (EV) owners, such as the $7,500 federal tax incentive for new EVs, $4,000 for used EVs, and rebates for Level 2 charging equipment. The legislation also introduces a $250 annual registration tax exclusively for EV owners, a move critics say unfairly penalizes green technology.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk tweeted. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it. You know you did wrong.”

In a follow-up interview on CBS’s Sunday Morning, Musk elaborated, saying, “This bill increases the deficit, slashes important green subsidies, and undermines the very work the DOGE team was doing to streamline government spending.”

Sources within the White House suggest Musk’s statements may be part of a strategic push to preserve key EV tax credits, especially after the administration recently rejected his proposal to integrate Starlink satellites into the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic systems.

House Speaker Mike Johnson also addressed the controversy, stating, “With all due respect, my friend Elon is terribly wrong about the one big, beautiful bill.” Johnson revealed that he had a 20-minute phone conversation with Musk earlier in the week and was surprised by Musk’s public disapproval.

While Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed the feud, saying Trump was well aware of Musk’s stance, other Republican insiders voiced frustration. “Journalists shouldn’t take his comments at face value,” one GOP aide remarked. “They need to scrutinize how this affects his bottom line.”

The unfolding dispute underscores the increasingly complex relationship between tech giants and the political establishment. As the Trump administration doubles down on its fiscal policies, Musk’s dissent could signal a broader rift between Silicon Valley and Washington.

For now, the tax bill’s future in the Senate remains uncertain but Musk’s outspoken criticism has intensified an already heated debate over spending, innovation, and the influence of big business on politics.
